Community Outreach June 2015

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, is a holiday in the United States that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas in June 1865, and more generally the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South. Celebrated on June 19, the term is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth,[1][2] and is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in most states. (Wikipedia 2015)

The holiday is observed primarily on a local scale within your community. Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, Cultural Dance and traditional garments.

Now that there is an understanding of what the celebratory event is about;  a demographic concept of the community at large -attending & participating- can be deduced. And thereby through analysis of these demographics questions as to what services? What resources? And the information provided to the potential diverse presence of the local community at large during this event.
Information about child care services, healthy living resources ie.- Health insurance, healthy food services like Calfresh and organized food pantries, as well as, day camps and lunch in the park resources for kids on summer break or any kind of family basic needs.

The question could be raised as to how an event with vendors and performers could   affluently help the community.

We could look at the preparation alone that goes into coordinating such an event and how each local business grows stronger community roots. We could also analyze the Community based organizations and other state funded or non-profit organizations attending & how they provide connection points  for the local storefront vendors and the community at large. All in all causing a stimulus within the local population. Or better yet we could bask in the historic event it is each year and as tradition would have that In June, 2005, JUNETEENTH.com launched an historic advocacy campaign to recognize and raise awareness for the 150th Anniversary of Juneteenth that will be celebrated in the year 2015.  The campaign aims to increase knowledge and appreciation of the roles, achievements and contributions of African Americans to our society, and pay tribute to an ancestral heritage upon whose shoulders many stand.

This year what I look forward to is the cultural acknowledgement and ability to raise awareness not only about the obvious gathering of a diverse community, but the result of the multicultural issues that traverse all cultural border lines and the availability of local services.

No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite Nelson Mandela
