Have you ever seen the bumper sticker “This is not the life I ordered!” And its always on a family vehicle.
I would attribute that to the fantasy that is created in our youth and the ideological construct that we imagine our independent life would be when starting a new life; similarly to owning your first vehicle or going to college or purchasing your first home. We imagine our higher selves in a state of bliss, throwing caution to the wind; about the consequential responsilities and tribulations that follow these choice decisions.
That is where the part of adulting takes place. “Courage is being brave and taking action; when you thought it impossible”.
Adulting on the other hand is the decision to no longer procrastinate, let things slide or avoid responsibility, and complete the task at hand. Also, being goal oriented and making tough decisions between work life balance.
Not the fallacy we construct as children of all the things we will do once we no longer have parental guidance. Which seems to be the preconception and in my opinion the reason a lot of people never live up to there better selves. Hence, they are stuck like a dear in headlights; by the unfairness of their lives.
It was not until I became a parent and that I truly understood the clarity of really prioritizing and drilling down the what ifs and the whys to something less existential and more foundational. As a parent you sometimes encounter difficult decisions, as we did being special needs parents; that the motto “Work hard / play hard”, takes on a different shape when having to consider consequential future outcomes.
