Some time ago I blogged a post “Word on the Street” to the blogosphere; which was about the “Split Roll” property tax affecting small business owners. A small business does not always mean the ‘Mom & Pops’ convenience storefronts. According to SBA It is a manufacturing companies with 500 employees or fewer and most non-manufacturing business with annual receipts under 7.5 million. Now some factories have way less employees than that and not every business thrives in the Millons at the end of their fiscal year. Thus, it can be your small local tortilleria factory or bakery.
The proposal if you read the post was that of business having to pay added taxes to help support local community and other business’ for social good. It is a sound argument to have local establishments give back to the community in which they capitalize and profit from. However, as a forced mandate it does not seem equitable to all establishments. On the other hand, a government incentive that promotes charitable giving from small and large business’ to local organizations for social good is not only equitable, but also an ethical platform for companies to decide to give back and maybe even promote their goodness with-in their community.
The freedoms of the entrepenuer with the courage to start a business and then stick with it to make it thrive is something that should be encouraged and a taxation seems like it would penalize the small business owner that saw a need and decided to service its community.
I was reminded of my post to the blogosphere while fixing a pancake breakfast for my family. We are connoseurs of the Krusteaz pancake brand and I noticed that on the labeling that they supported a familiar logo that helped me and probably countless other families. “Boys and Girls Club“. If you are not aquantied with this organization then I really encourage you to look into all the social good they do for your local community. We probably also are use to seeing the cereal box tops in support of local schools and childhood literacy programs. Which for some reason has began to faze out of circulation on the most popular cereal brands. A real tragedy in my opinion, because programs like these helps to teach the youth about giving back. It also encourages family bonding and gives the overwhelmed parent that is just trying to make sense of it all and ensure they are co-creating the future their children and their ever-growing society that surrounds them is supportive and full of opportunity for them.
With the help of people giving back to people is the betterment of community and organizational donation to charities or non-profits is the betterment of society.
